Ukraine's General Staff reported on September 7 that Russia has lost approximately 1,497,980 troops since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,540 Russian casualties sustained over the previous day. Earlier, on September 5, the General Staff reported around 1,495,050 Russian troops lost, including 1,260 casualties from the past day.
According to the Ukrainian military's report from September 5, Russia has also lost a significant amount of military equipment, including 12,328 tanks, 25,273 armored combat vehicles, 144,043 vehicles and fuel tanks, 49,227 artillery systems, 2,093 multiple launch rocket systems, and 1,604 air defense systems. The report also listed 441 aircraft, 355 helicopters, 2,502 unmanned ground systems, 499,809 operational-tactical UAVs, 5,070 cruise missiles, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines lost by Russian forces.
Ukraine's General Staff has not disclosed its own losses, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western think-tank reports suggest that Russian casualties significantly exceed Ukraine's. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has estimated the casualty ratio to be "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1." A January 2026 CSIS report projected that Ukraine likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 of those estimated to be killed in action.
While Ukrainian officials rarely release casualty figures, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in an interview with France TV on February 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action since the war began, with a considerably higher number missing in action. The intensity of Russian drone attacks and ongoing fighting has made it challenging for Ukraine to recover and confirm the identities of fallen soldiers through DNA analysis.
