The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on September 5 that Russia has lost approximately 1,495,050 troops since the commencement of its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,260 casualties sustained by Russian forces in the preceding 24 hours.
In addition to personnel losses, the report detailed significant equipment attrition for Russia, including 12,328 tanks, 25,273 armored combat vehicles, 144,043 vehicles and fuel tanks, 49,227 artillery systems, 2,093 multiple launch rocket systems, and 1,604 air defense systems. Russia has also reportedly lost 441 aircraft, 355 helicopters, 2,502 unmanned ground systems, 499,809 operational-tactical UAVs, 5,070 cruise missiles, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukraine's General Staff has withheld its own casualty figures, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western think tanks, such as the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), concur that Russian losses substantially exceed those of Ukraine, estimating the ratio to be between "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1." A January 2026 CSIS report projected that Ukraine likely experienced between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with an estimated 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action. Ukrainian officials rarely disclose such figures, though President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in February that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action, with a significant number also missing in action.
