The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on September 3 that Russia has lost approximately 1,492,350 troops since the commencement of its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,320 casualties sustained by Russian forces over the preceding day.
In addition to personnel losses, the report detailed significant equipment attrition for Russia, including 12,324 tanks, 25,264 armored combat vehicles, 143,150 vehicles and fuel tanks, 49,085 artillery systems, 2,085 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,600 air defense systems, 441 aircraft, 355 helicopters, 2,476 unmanned ground systems, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukraine's General Staff has maintained operational secrecy regarding its own losses during the conflict. However, independent Western think-tank reports suggest that Russian casualties substantially exceed those of Ukraine. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has estimated the casualty ratio to be approximately 2.5:1 or 2:1 in favor of Ukraine. A January 2026 CSIS report projected that Ukraine likely experienced between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 of those being killed in action.
While official figures from Ukraine are rarely disclosed, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in an interview with France TV on February 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action since the war began, with a considerable number also listed as missing in action. The operational challenges, including the intensity of Russian drone activity and ongoing combat, have made it difficult for Ukraine to retrieve and confirm the identities of fallen soldiers through DNA analysis.
