The attacks on Sochi, a symbolic and strategic location for Russia, demonstrate Ukraine's expanding reach and its efforts to disrupt Russian revenue streams and logistics supporting the war effort.
Ukraine's military conducted multiple waves of attacks against the Russian city of Sochi on September 3-4, including a naval drone strike on a Russian vessel and a reported fire at an oil depot. The Ukrainian Navy stated that the targeted vessel, identified as Nefrit, was involved in Russia's maritime and energy infrastructure, supporting oil and gas operations, cargo transport, and underwater work. Video released by the Navy showed the aftermath of the strike. Separately, footage circulating on Russian Telegram channels appeared to show a fire at an oil depot in central Sochi, near the port, following an aerial attack. There were also unconfirmed reports that an explosion occurred near a Russian Pantsir air defense system at the port. Ukraine has been targeting Russian energy and maritime infrastructure as part of its strategy to disrupt revenue and logistics supporting Russia's war effort. In July alone, Ukrainian forces reportedly struck dozens of vessels, including tankers and cargo ships, part of Russia's 'shadow fleet' used to transport sanctioned oil. Sochi, referred to as Russia's 'Second Capital,' is significant as it houses President Vladimir Putin's official summer residence and is a resort city for the elite, located approximately 650 to 700 kilometers from the Ukraine border.
