X, formerly known as Twitter, has introduced a new feature called Cashtag that enables US users to execute stock, ETF, and cryptocurrency trades directly from their timelines. This move integrates financial trading capabilities into the social media platform, leveraging the existing trend of users discussing assets online.
The Cashtag feature transforms ticker symbols into interactive links. When users tap on a Cashtag, they are directed to the asset's page on X, where they can view live charts, related conversations, and now, initiate trades through partner brokerages. Initial partners for this initiative include Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken, and Coinbase.
Mridul Singhai, X Product Engineering lead, stated that Cashtags bridge the gap between on-timeline tickers and the actual market, offering seamless access to trading. Users can tap a Cashtag, view asset information and posts, and then select 'Trade' to be redirected to a partner brokerage's app or website to log in and complete their transaction. Monique Pintarelli, SpaceXAI's head of Global Advertising, highlighted that the feature connects financial conversations with action, allowing users to move from discovery to trading without interruption.
However, the integration of trading functionalities on X raises concerns about potential market manipulation by bots, spammers, and other malicious actors, although such activities are already present on the platform. The company noted that users can also tap directly on a brokerage partner's name to access their services.
