The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is implementing an $875 million artificial intelligence software program to combat air traffic control shortages and enhance flight safety. The program, named Smart (Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories), is a cloud-based platform designed to integrate with existing FAA systems.
Smart will leverage AI to analyze various factors including airline schedules, weather patterns, airport capacity, and airspace conditions to predict traffic flows and proactively identify potential conflicts. The software was developed by a firm called Air Space Intelligence and will be deployed over a 12-year period.
