The AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) has been formed by Emerald AI, Google, Nvidia, and Anthropic, with the goal of integrating demand response programs into the development of new data centers. This initiative seeks to address the growing electricity demands of data centers, particularly those supporting AI workloads, by allowing them to temporarily reduce their power consumption during peak grid times.
Demand response, a long-standing utility practice, traditionally involved large industrial users reducing their electricity usage in exchange for payment. Data centers can now participate by pausing noncritical tasks or shifting compute loads to other facilities with available capacity, as facilitated by Emerald AI's software. This approach aims to avoid the reliance on diesel generators, which have environmental drawbacks.
While Google has been developing its own demand response tools and other companies like Enel X offer similar services, Emerald AI's advantage lies in its direct connection between utilities and data centers, enabling rapid responses akin to battery storage. The startup's recent $150 million Series A funding round, led by Energize Capital and DCVC, provides the necessary capital for wider technology deployment.
Despite the potential of sophisticated demand response to mitigate the need for new power generation sources, Emerald AI's chief scientist, Ayse Coskun, noted that it will not entirely eliminate the requirement for additional energy infrastructure.
