GlobalFoundries and Marvell Technology have expanded their multi-year agreement to increase production capacity for a type of semiconductor crucial for high-speed optical connections within data centers. The deal, announced on September 17, aims to address the growing demand driven by the rapid expansion of AI data centers.
The expanded collaboration will boost manufacturing capacity for GlobalFoundries' silicon germanium (SiGe) technology at its facility in Burlington, Vermont. SiGe technology is key to developing faster and more energy-efficient semiconductor devices, essential for handling the high data volumes required by modern optical networking.
Marvell stated that the increased capacity will enable them to meet the significant growth anticipated in demand for advanced optical networking products. These include pluggable optical transceivers, near-packaged optics, and co-packaged optics, all vital components for AI infrastructure.
