Trump invites AI leaders to dinner with Xi

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon will attend the summit, representing the company and "the strength of American technology leadership on the global stage," according to a Qualcomm spokesperson. Anthropic has not commented on whether it received an invitation, and spokespeople for Google, Meta, and AMD did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

There are differing views among AI leaders regarding the pace of development. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman supports calls for an industrywide slowdown and believes Trump and Xi should establish standards for building and testing advanced AI models. In contrast, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has dismissed fears of AI posing an existential threat, comparing them to "hysterical" reactions. Huang has also reportedly lobbied the White House to permit Nvidia to sell its advanced AI chips to China, raising the possibility that chip sales could be a topic of discussion during the negotiations.

President Trump has a history of inviting tech executives to his summits with Xi. In May, he invited 17 business leaders to accompany him to China for discussions with Xi, with Huang receiving a last-minute invitation to that trip.
