Tinder launches 'Group Hangouts' to foster social, IRL dating experiences

Users initiate a 'Group Hangout' by selecting an activity and inviting at least two friends. Once a group reaches a minimum of three members, its profile becomes visible in Tinder's main card stack. Profiles can include up to 15 people. A connection is established if at least one member from each interested group 'likes' the other group, leading to a shared chat where plans can be made.

Tinder is incorporating user controls, allowing individuals to leave conversations without exiting their friend group and to block or report other participants. The 'Group Hangouts' feature is accessible at the top of Tinder's home screen and is currently rolling out in phases in the U.S. and select international markets, with broader availability planned.

This initiative builds upon Tinder's previous efforts in group-oriented dating, such as last year's 'Double Date' feature. 'Group Hangouts' expands this concept by increasing the number of participants and shifting the focus from one-on-one dates to more social outings. Claire Watanabe, VP of product management at Tinder, noted that inspiration came from observing college sports teams using the app to explore new towns. She indicated that groups tend to remain small, typically consisting of close friends.

The company has been emphasizing real-world interactions, having launched an 'Events' tab in March for discovering local activities and expanding these in-person events to more cities this month. Competitor Bumble is also exploring similar avenues with its 'Plans' feature, designed for casual, group-based real-world connections.

This strategic shift by Tinder occurs during a challenging period for the company, which has seen its revenue decline and monthly active users decrease by 7% in the second quarter, following an 8% drop in the prior quarter.
