Discord is enhancing its advertising capabilities by introducing new tools designed to attract a wider range of businesses, from small marketers to larger companies. The platform announced Discord Ads Manager, a centralized platform for managing ad campaigns, including forecasting, objective-based bidding, and performance monitoring. This move aims to open the platform to advertisers regardless of their budget, a significant shift from previous direct sales relationships required for running campaigns.
In addition to the Ads Manager, Discord is evolving its video advertising offering. The existing Video Quests beta format is being rebranded as Video Quests Reserve, described as a premium, reservation-based option for high-impact brand moments, designed to provide advertisers with a scalable way to drive impressions and clicks. Discord plans to introduce additional tracking objectives for advertisers soon.
These advertising initiatives are seen as crucial for Discord's financial viability and its potential IPO, as reported by Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources. The company aims to drive value beyond its subscription services and game sales by making the platform more accessible to businesses of all sizes and enabling them to convert engagement into measurable results. Discord Global VP of Advertising Adam Bauer indicated that the company will continue to invest in ad formats catering to various stages of the marketing funnel, from brand awareness to driving app installs and purchases.
Despite the business rationale, some users express concerns about the potential impact of increased advertising on the platform's user experience. Discord co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy acknowledged these concerns about "enshittification" but emphasized the need for thoughtful monetization to reinvest in the platform's improvement. Currently, Discord's ads are described as minimally intrusive, appearing as small pop-ups or expandable sidebars, but the company risks alienating long-time users if ads become more aggressive in size or frequency.
