Reddit to restrict Old.Reddit.com access to active users

Previously, in July, Reddit began requiring all users to be logged in to access Old.Reddit.com. The latest announcement, made via a post by an employee known as "judy-funnie," indicates that this six-month active usage requirement will be phased in over the coming months. The company emphasized that this change aims to keep Old.Reddit.com available for its regular users while mitigating malicious automated activity.

An exception has been made for moderators, who will retain access to Old.Reddit.com regardless of their recent activity, provided they are logged in. Reddit spokesperson Rosa Kim confirmed via email that the company is working on the future of Old.Reddit.com and that the current changes are focused on limiting unauthenticated access and reducing automated abuse, not on removing the interface for its reliant users.

Concerns have been raised among longtime Reddit users, who often prefer the older interface for its familiar look, layout, and homepage feed, that these changes signal a potential future shutdown of Old.Reddit.com. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman had previously stated in 2025 that Old.Reddit.com would remain online as long as it was used, but later indicated in August that changes were necessary, potentially including access limitations and rebuilding the site on a modern tech stack.
