Anima Anandkumar and Benedikt Jenik, who were once considered to lead Jeff Bezos's AI venture Project Prometheus, have launched their own company, Accelerated Understanding Inc. The company has developed a novel AI model designed for physics, capable of processing an unprecedented 5 trillion data points in a single prompt. This system diverges from language-centric models like ChatGPT by utilizing neural operators, a technology pioneered by Anandkumar, to predict physical phenomena rather than language patterns.
Anandkumar, a Caltech professor, and Jenik, an AI infrastructure engineer, stated that their physics-centric approach offers a nature-centric view of intelligence. They believe this AI can be applied to various business sectors, including optimizing chip design by understanding material properties and temperatures, predicting extreme weather events, powering robotics, and analyzing geological data for energy companies. Unlike bespoke mathematical models, their single AI aims to handle any physics-related query for businesses.
The founders revealed that they had been approached by Vik Bajaj, an investor and co-founder of Project Prometheus, in late 2024. Anandkumar, a former Amazon scientist and Nvidia director, and Jenik, her husband, had already started their company. An offer letter for 'Project Prometheus' proposed Anandkumar as the public face and scientific visionary, with both receiving a significant stake and substantial salaries. However, they ultimately chose to build their company independently.
Bezos and Bajaj proceeded to raise $12 billion for Project Prometheus in June 2026, which targets AI for automating the manufacturing of complex physical systems. Anandkumar mentioned that Accelerated Understanding has secured partnerships with computing providers for hardware clusters, though she declined to name them or discuss funding. She also noted that Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang had encouraged her pursuit of neural operators, a concept she had advanced while leading a team at Nvidia focused on GPU applications for frontier AI.
