Alphabet's Google has expanded its Gemini Enterprise artificial intelligence platform, introducing new tools specifically designed for law firms and the financial services sector. The move signals an acceleration in the technology industry's efforts to cater to the growing demand for AI solutions within the legal field.
The Gemini Enterprise for Legal offering aims to assist law firms in managing both routine and complex legal work, thereby enabling lawyers to concentrate on higher-value services. Google emphasized that the platform is built to maintain data security and confidentiality. Key features include integration with existing legal software and data platforms, along with AI agents capable of handling specialized legal and administrative tasks with minimal human intervention.
This expansion follows Google's October launch of Gemini Enterprise for broader business customers. Google Cloud has emerged as a significant growth area for Alphabet. In addition to the legal sector, Google is rolling out industry-specific tools for financial services and plans further specialized offerings.
Other technology companies, such as Anthropic, have also been enhancing their enterprise AI solutions, including those for the legal industry. A 2026 report by Deloitte indicated that law firms are making substantial investments in AI technology as part of an ongoing transformation.
Competitors in the legal tech market are also advancing. Thomson Reuters recently launched Thomson 1.0, a proprietary large language model trained on its legal research content. Google stated that its Gemini platform will establish secure connections with legal technology platforms from Thomson Reuters, Harvey, and LexisNexis, among others.
Law firms are increasingly adopting generative AI for tasks like legal research and drafting filings, as well as for business operations such as client and case management, to boost efficiency and reduce costs. Google's platform is designed for flexibility, allowing firms to select from various embedded AI models, according to Amrita Mehrok, a Google Cloud product director.
Several major law firms are partnering with AI providers or developing their own platforms. Google highlighted that Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, and Williams & Connolly are among the firms collaborating on Gemini Enterprise for Legal. Jonathon Soler, co-managing partner at Weil Gotshal, noted that clients increasingly expect AI-driven efficiencies from their legal counsel.
