OpenAI is expanding its AI offerings with ChatGPT Work, a platform designed to bring the power of AI agents to white-collar professionals. Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI's head of product for core offerings including ChatGPT and Codex, explained that the company's mission is to make advanced AI technology accessible to the broadest possible population.
Sottiaux stated that ChatGPT Work aims to package coding agent capabilities into a safe, delightful, and user-friendly experience, available on mobile and web. He highlighted that the platform is part of the $20 per month Plus plan, emphasizing the significant value users receive. OpenAI believes this approach aligns with user willingness to pay for substantial utility.
The company views this diffusion of technology as crucial for winning over public opinion towards AI. Sottiaux noted that while Codex was built for a technical audience, the current maturity of the technology allows for broader accessibility. He described the product design philosophy as one of "discovery," where OpenAI identifies and builds upon the most capable aspects of its models, incorporating user feedback for continuous improvement.
Regarding the cost of AI, Sottiaux addressed concerns about token usage and potential expenses for users and CFOs. He assured that OpenAI is actively working on efficiency, citing recent price cuts and a goal to provide more utility for the same cost over time. He also emphasized the company's significant investment in safety and alignment for its AI models, particularly when granting access to sensitive user data like emails and messages.
