Scientists suggest that while a direct link to global warming for this specific event is still under investigation, the accelerating rate of climate change, driven by fossil fuel consumption, significantly increases the probability of such extreme weather events. The Himalayan region is warming at a faster pace than many other parts of the world, leading to melting glaciers and thawing permafrost, which destabilize mountain slopes and redraw river courses.
Experts like Saswata Sanyal from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development note that these complex disasters have profound impacts on downstream communities and investments. The region has experienced a series of devastating events in recent years, including floods and landslides, causing thousands of deaths and billions of dollars in damage, leaving communities with little time to recover between disasters.
Manjeet Dhakal, a Nepali climate policy expert, stated that the "adaptation threshold has been crossed in some areas," suggesting that rebuilding may become unviable and forcing residents to relocate. He also pointed out that floods can obliterate not just homes but also the land and essential infrastructure, necessitating climate risk considerations in future resettlement plans. Mitigation strategies proposed include stricter land-use rules, better infrastructure assessments, enhanced cross-border monitoring, and improved early warning systems.
However, challenges remain in effectively warning and protecting populations. Sanyal noted that some recipients of text alerts were visitors or migrant workers who did not understand Nepali, while others underestimated the risk. Some river monitoring systems were also overwhelmed or destroyed during the floods.
Dhakal emphasized that Nepal, despite its minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, is disproportionately affected by climate change. He called for accountability from major emitters and urged for urgent reductions in carbon emissions, using the recent disaster as a stark example.
