Egypt is projected to produce approximately 10.2 million tons of wheat in 2026, solidifying its position as the leading wheat producer among Arab nations. This anticipated increase of 6.5% from 2025's output of 9.4 million tons is attributed to an expansion in planted areas and the adoption of improved wheat varieties.
This rise in domestic production is expected to reduce Egypt's wheat imports to around 12.5 million tons in 2026, a decrease from the 13.2 million tons imported the previous year. Despite this reduction, Egypt will continue to be one of the world's largest wheat importers.
The country's wheat planted area has expanded to 3.76 million feddans, an increase of about 600,000 feddans from the prior season. Farmers delivered approximately 5 million tons of wheat to the government during the procurement campaign, marking a record volume under the state procurement program. The government has set the procurement price at EGP 2,500 per ardeb to incentivize production. High-yielding and climate-tolerant wheat varieties are also being introduced.
Wheat consumption in Egypt is projected to grow to 20.4 million tonnes in 2025-26, largely due to population growth, with the national population expected to reach 124 million by 2030. Russia, Ukraine, and the European Union remain Egypt's primary wheat suppliers.
In addition to wheat, Egypt's corn production is forecast to increase by 3.6% to 7.25 million tonnes in 2025-26, supported by expanded planting and demand from the poultry and livestock sectors. However, corn imports are still expected to reach 8.7 million tonnes.
