US Vice President JD Vance stated in an interview with Reuters that Iran's nuclear program has been destroyed and its efforts to disrupt global oil and gas flows by attacking commercial shipping are largely failing. Vance, campaigning in Alaska, emphasized that Iran's attempts to damage the world economy result in greater damage to themselves.
He reiterated that the fundamental US goal is to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and to prevent regional nuclear proliferation. Vance noted that Iran's nuclear facilities and enrichment capabilities have been destroyed and the US will ensure they cannot be rebuilt. He described the attacks on shipping and the US response as subplots to the larger goal of nuclear non-proliferation.
Regarding negotiations, Vance indicated that the US is talking with Iran's political leadership, including the foreign minister and president, but noted it's not entirely clear how decisions are made within the country. He questioned Iran's possession of 60% enriched fuel, stating it is not necessary for energy production and is only useful for weapons-grade uranium. Vance stressed that the US needs to trade actions for actions, not words, in any agreement.
Vance also acknowledged awareness of Iranian efforts to conduct strikes against American assets globally, stating that capable military and intelligence personnel are in place to prevent them. He also addressed concerns about munitions stocks, noting that warfare has changed.
