The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on September 25 that Russia has lost approximately 1,525,570 troops since the beginning of its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,590 Russian casualties reported over the past day.
In addition to troop losses, the report detailed significant equipment losses for Russia, including 12,369 tanks, 25,415 armored combat vehicles, 153,152 vehicles and fuel tanks, 50,275 artillery systems, 2,157 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,669 air defense systems, 443 aircraft, and 356 helicopters. Russia has also lost 2,736 unmanned ground vehicles, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukraine's General Staff has not disclosed its own losses, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western think-tank reports suggest Russian casualties are substantially higher than Ukraine's. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates the ratio of Russian to Ukrainian losses to be "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1." A January 2026 CSIS report projected that Ukraine likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on February 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action, in addition to those missing in action. The intensity of fighting and drone attacks has made retrieving bodies for confirmation difficult.
