The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on Aug. 28 that Russia has sustained approximately 1,483,780 troops lost since the full-scale invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,630 casualties over the preceding day.
In addition to personnel losses, the report detailed significant equipment attrition for Russian forces, including 12,307 tanks, 25,237 armored combat vehicles, 48,749 artillery systems, and 440 aircraft. Ukraine's General Staff has not disclosed its own casualty figures, citing operational secrecy.
Independent Western analysis suggests Russian losses significantly outweigh those of Ukraine. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates the ratio of Russian to Ukrainian casualties to be roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1. A January 2026 CSIS report projected that Ukraine likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
