Kyiv, Ukraine – Russian forces launched an extensive drone attack on Ukraine, with the capital Kyiv experiencing an unusual all-day barrage on August 27, targeting warehouses on its outskirts. Overnight on August 28, Russia deployed 164 Shahed-type drones, half of which were jet-powered, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept 137 of these drones, though strikes were recorded in 16 locations and drone debris fell in four others.
Throughout the day in Kyiv Oblast, one person was killed and two were injured. Russian jet-powered drones specifically targeted warehouses belonging to Ukrainian businesses, resulting in damage to at least 14 warehouses, 16 houses, and three apartment buildings. Dmytro Feliksov, founder of the Readeat bookstore chain, reported that a warehouse storing books for Readeat, Book.ua, and several Ukrainian publishers was hit.
Across other regions, the attacks resulted in significant casualties. In Kharkiv Oblast, two people were killed and four injured, including two children. Sumy Oblast reported one woman killed by a drone and one man killed by a glide bomb, with five other injuries. Kherson Oblast saw one person killed and 11 injured, including a child. In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, a civilian woman was killed and six others injured, with a drone strike on an Epicenter hypermarket injuring at least four people. Donetsk Oblast reported one person killed and three injured, while Dnipropetrovsk Oblast recorded two deaths overnight on August 28 and eight injuries on August 27.
