Ukraine's General Staff of the Armed Forces reported on August 26 that Russia has lost approximately 1,480,750 troops since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,450 casualties sustained by Russian forces over the preceding day.
In addition to personnel losses, the report detailed significant equipment losses for Russia, including 12,300 tanks, 25,230 armored combat vehicles, 139,754 vehicles and fuel tanks, 48,641 artillery systems, 2,062 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,588 air defense systems, 440 aircraft, 354 helicopters, 481,605 unmanned aerial vehicles, 2,387 unmanned ground systems, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukraine's General Staff has withheld its own casualty figures, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western think-tank reports suggest that Russian casualties significantly outweigh those of Ukraine, with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimating the ratio to be "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1." A January 2026 CSIS report projected that Ukraine likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
While official figures from Ukraine are rarely disclosed, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in an interview with France TV on February 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action since the war's outset, with a considerable number also missing in action. The intensity of drone warfare and ongoing combat has made retrieving bodies for DNA confirmation extremely challenging for Ukraine.
