Nebraska regulator dismisses farmer payment complaint against The Andersons

A Nebraska regulator has dismissed a complaint against The Andersons, an Ohio-based agribusiness, concerning allegations of delayed payments to a farmer. The Nebraska Public Service Commission's Grain Warehouses and Dealers Department filed the complaint on August 6, investigating a producer's claim that the company had not paid for 17 grain deliveries between November 2023 and January 2024.

As part of a stipulated agreement reviewed by Reuters, The Andersons agreed to pay a $5,000 administrative fine, while denying any violations. The company, a significant U.S. ethanol producer and grain merchandiser, is licensed as a grain dealer in Nebraska. The state regulator also encouraged any farmers who have experienced similar payment delays to come forward.

U.S. farmers are currently facing significant financial strain due to rising production costs. This scrutiny of grain buyers comes after several dealer failures in recent years left producers with unpaid contracts, including the collapse of Omaha-based grain dealer Hansen-Mueller last year, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
