Aldi announced on Wednesday that it will lower prices on a variety of grocery items in the U.S. for the fall season, a move expected to save consumers approximately $86 million. This initiative comes as U.S. grocery retailers are intensely competing for budget-conscious shoppers who are being selective with their spending due to inflation and economic uncertainty.
Starting September 23 and lasting until at least November 3, Aldi stores nationwide will feature reduced prices on items such as Autumncrisp grapes, Bartlett pears, Brussels sprouts, and a wide selection of apples and potatoes. The company stated that nearly one-third of its everyday in-store assortment is now priced lower than it was last year. Specific examples include Honeycrisp apples at $1.99 per pound, a 35% decrease from the previous year and the lowest price in over five years, and Kirkwood chicken breast family packs also at $1.99 per pound, their lowest price since 2022.
Aldi's Chief Commercial Officer, Scott Patton, emphasized the company's commitment to value, stating, "At ALDI, value is a year-round promise, not a promotion." He added that the company continuously seeks operational efficiencies to pass savings onto customers. Competitors like Kroger and Walmart are also maintaining low prices to attract cost-conscious shoppers.
