Google tests Gemini AI for making business calls on users' behalf

The "Call for Me" feature builds on Google's previous AI-assisted calling technologies. Unlike earlier versions, Gemini will be able to share approved personal information during calls, allowing it to handle more complex tasks. These tasks include inquiring about product availability, making restaurant reservations, rescheduling appointments, or placing items on hold. Users will have the ability to follow the progress of the call through a live transcript and can intervene at any point. The calls will be made using the user's personal phone number directly from their device.

Google stated that the AI can introduce itself, navigate automated phone menus, wait on hold, and conduct conversations. The company is launching this experiment on a small scale because real-world conversations are nuanced, and it needs time to refine the feature before a wider release. Previous AI calling experiments from Google include the Google Assistant's ability to make salon reservations and the "Ask for Me" feature that allowed Gemini to inquire about pricing or services.
