Google has made its AI-powered video generation tool, Google Vids, available for free to anyone with a Google or Workspace account. The browser-based editor now offers full HD 1080p video generation and upscaling, powered by the Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash AI model. This move significantly lowers the barrier to entry for creating high-definition video content.
Previously, advanced AI video generation often required paid subscriptions or specialized software. Google Vids introduces features like scene extension to maintain consistency and precise clip duration settings, allowing users to better align generated footage with scripts or voiceovers. Older, lower-resolution AI clips can also be upscaled to 1080p.
All videos generated through the tool are embedded with SynthID, an invisible machine-readable watermark developed by Google DeepMind, which can be verified using a separate detection tool. The generation process is reportedly fast, with short videos created in under 30 seconds.
The free tier offers a standard allowance for personal Google accounts, with paid AI plans unlocking larger generation capacities. Google Workspace Business and Enterprise subscribers receive more extensive generation pools and administrative controls.
The rollout coincides with the closure of OpenAI's Sora developer API, marking a competitive shift in the AI video generation landscape. Google has also been aggressive on pricing, recently reducing the API rate for its Veo 3.1 Lite model. A text-to-speech feature, Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite, is also planned to support over 100 languages.
