The documentary has already drawn criticism from its subject, Elon Musk, who has labeled it a "hit piece" and a "psy op," and threatened a defamation lawsuit.
Despite rumors that Universal Pictures was hesitant about a theatrical release, the film is still on track for a US release through domestic distributor Bleecker Street Media. Gibney, known for documentaries on subjects ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Steve Jobs and Elizabeth Holmes, has a history of tackling controversial topics.
