This change comes as Russia continued its nearly uninterrupted attacks on the Ukrainian capital for the seventh consecutive day, with drone strikes on central Kyiv injuring at least 13 people and damaging several buildings, including a university and a residential structure.
Zelensky condemned the attacks, urging international partners to provide air defense systems and intensify sanctions against Russia. The strikes hit the National University of Food Technology, though students were reportedly in shelters and unharmed. A residential building and a medical facility in the Shevchenkivskyi district also sustained damage.
In a separate incident, a shootout erupted between units of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) and the Defense Intelligence Agency (HUR) during an investigation into an alleged Russian FSB plot targeting Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps. The Prosecutor General's Office confirmed an armed attack on SBU officers, leading to the use of weapons to cease resistance. Zelensky described the situation as 'absolutely disgraceful' and vowed accountability.
President Zelensky also appointed Sviatoslav Zaiets as the new commander of Ukraine's Ground Forces, replacing Hennadii Shapovalov without stated reason. Zaiets is noted for his understanding of modern warfare digitalization and robotization.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces reported successful overnight strikes on Russian military targets, including an ammunition depot in Volodymyrivka and a logistics depot in Ocheretyne, both in occupied Donetsk Oblast. They also hit a concentration of weapons and military equipment in Russia's Bryansk Oblast.
