A US delegation met with Iranian officials, with President Donald Trump expressing optimism about the potential for a deal. Trump stated he would make a significant decision regarding Iran after the midterm elections in November.
"I feel very good right now," Witkoff said. U.S. and Iranian officials have typically met alongside other intermediaries, such as Middle Eastern countries. "They had a very good meeting and we’ll see how it turns out," Trump added. "Certainly, it’s to their advantage to make a deal. If we can do that, it’s preferable I guess."
The White House and Iranian officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the meeting. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News earlier Tuesday that Trump is open to meeting with the Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the General Assembly. "I think the president is open to a meeting with him or anybody," Rubio said, referring to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
