Russian drone and missile strikes kill 2 in Kyiv, ending capital truce

Russia struck the Ukrainian capital Kyiv with drones and missiles overnight, killing two people and injuring at least 10, local authorities reported. The attack ended a temporary truce that had been in effect from Sept. 5 to Sept. 8, during which neither Russia nor Ukraine's capitals were to be attacked. This pause coincided with the visit of U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who were in Kyiv for discussions aimed at ending the conflict.

Damage and fires were reported in at least five districts of Kyiv, affecting civilian infrastructure in at least 16 locations. A 26-story non-residential building was hit in the Holosiivskyi district, and fires spread to a nearby building. Rescuers saved one person and evacuated two from a residential building in the same district. People were also trapped in a five-story residential building in the Solomianskyi district, with at least 10 rescued. Fires were also recorded in the Darnytskyi and Podilskyi districts.

While the truce was in effect for the capitals, Russia continued to attack other regions of Ukraine. On Sept. 7, Russian drones were reported flying toward Kyiv, and damage occurred in the surrounding Kyiv Oblast, including to a private house, car, warehouse, and enterprise. Ukraine's military intelligence claimed that overnight drone strikes hit a railway bridge over the North Crimean Canal and a Russian aircraft in Russian-occupied Crimea.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that the city's curfew would be shortened to 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. starting September 10, due to intensified Russian aerial attacks. Public transportation services will be extended by an hour, but entertainment and outdoor sports events without shelters will be prohibited.
