OpenAI launches GPT-6 Sol and Luna, boasting lower cost and fewer mistakes

OpenAI has expanded its GPT-6 generation with the release of updated Sol and Luna models, following the earlier launch of GPT-6 Astra. The company is emphasizing significant improvements in efficiency and affordability, including a substantial price drop for API access. The new models are reportedly available at half the cost of the previous 5.6 series of Sol and Luna, a reduction attributed to advancements in caching and inference.

OpenAI claims that GPT-6 Sol and Luna are more factually accurate and exhibit a lower error rate, particularly in coding tasks. According to the company's internal evaluations, GPT-6 Sol makes approximately half the mistakes of its predecessor, achieving Astra-level reliability at a lower cost. The company also asserts that these new models surpass Anthropic's top offerings, such as Fable and Opus, in handling various tasks.

This release occurs amidst intense competition, with Anthropic launching a new version of Opus 5.5 just 90 minutes prior to OpenAI's announcement. The new versions of Sol and Luna are now accessible through ChatGPT Work and Codex for most paid accounts, and via the ChatGPT API. Luna will also be available in the desktop app and for Free and Go users, with a gradual rollout expected across ChatGPT platforms throughout the day.
