OpenAI announced on Friday that it is reducing the developer pricing for its GPT-5.6 Sol model by more than 20% for the next three months. This strategic move by the ChatGPT maker is a response to increasing competition from rivals such as Anthropic and various Chinese AI models.
The price adjustments will be implemented across OpenAI's application programming interface (API), affecting eligible plans for credits related to its agentic AI product, ChatGPT Work, and its coding tool, Codex. However, pricing for Pro, Plus, and Business subscriptions will remain unchanged.
Under the new pricing structure, GPT-5.6 Sol will cost $4 per 1 million input tokens and $20 per 1 million output tokens for standard short-context usage. This represents a decrease from the previous rates of $5 and $30, respectively. Earlier in the month, OpenAI had also reduced prices for its smaller models, cutting the cost of the GPT-5.6 Terra model by 20% and the Luna model by 80%.
In comparison, Anthropic lists its frontier Claude Fable 5 model at $10 per 1 million input tokens and $50 per 1 million output tokens, while its Claude Opus 5 model is priced at $5 per 1 million input tokens and $25 per 1 million output tokens.
