Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX is constructing a secret foundry in Bastrop, Texas, to manufacture critical components for natural gas turbines. This move is intended to accelerate the deployment of AI infrastructure by up to 18 months, addressing a significant bottleneck in power generation. Musk stated that while SpaceX and Tesla are rapidly building solar capacity, natural gas will remain necessary for several years to supplement and bootstrap solar power.
The demand for power is driven by the rapid growth of AI, with global data center electricity use projected to double by 2030. Gas turbine manufacturer GE Vernova is already sold out of production capacity through 2030, largely due to this demand. Consequently, major AI companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft are increasingly opting to build private gas-fired plants adjacent to their data centers rather than relying solely on the grid.
The specific challenge SpaceX aims to solve is the complex casting process for turbine blades, which operate at extremely high temperatures. Only four companies worldwide currently possess the expertise to produce these blades at an industrial scale, and they are at full capacity. By bringing this manufacturing in-house, SpaceX could gain a significant advantage.
However, the accelerated deployment of gas turbines raises environmental concerns. The NAACP has accused SpaceXAI of operating turbines in Memphis without required permits or pollution controls, citing emissions of smog-forming compounds and hazardous chemicals linked to respiratory diseases and cancers. Research in Memphis indicated a slight increase in air pollution near a SpaceXAI data center. Similarly, a study in Virginia's "Data Center Alley" found that emissions from a single facility's eight gas turbines could impact millions and potentially cause additional premature deaths annually, with marginalized communities bearing the heaviest burden.
