Mitsubishi Motors is set to reintroduce its iconic Pajero SUV in autumn 2026, marking a significant step in its strategy to regain global market presence and bolster sales volume. The new cross-country model will be built on the robust ladder frame of the Triton pickup truck, with specific development for its cabin and suspension to ensure outstanding off-road capability alongside a refined ride.
The company plans to prioritize hybrid technology for the new Pajero, especially in Southeast Asia, viewing it as a crucial bridge between traditional internal combustion engines and full electrification in markets where EV infrastructure is still developing. This aligns with Mitsubishi's broader vision of combining its heritage-driven design with modern electrification trends.
Historically, the Pajero, first launched in 1982, has been a flagship model for Mitsubishi, known for its durability and off-road performance, evidenced by 12 victories in the Dakar Rally. Across four generations, it achieved cumulative global sales of over 3.25 million units in more than 170 countries and regions. The revival aims to leverage this brand recall and appeal to loyal customers while attracting new ones in the competitive SUV segment.
