Microsoft will unveil a new laptop powered by Nvidia's chips on Wednesday, aiming to establish Windows as a platform for AI agents capable of performing tasks like coding without relying on cloud access. The move represents a significant bet for Microsoft, potentially shifting some processing from its costly Azure cloud data centers to high-powered personal computers, a market also being pursued by rival Apple.
For Nvidia, success in the Windows PC market could challenge the dominance of its long-standing rivals, Intel and Advanced Micro Devices. The event, hosted by Microsoft in San Francisco, is billed as an update on its Windows operating system and Surface hardware line.
Key challenges for both companies will be demonstrating the safety and security of running AI agents directly on personal computers. Nvidia is reportedly working to prevent a repeat of past AI hub hacks, while Apple is enhancing security for AI agents on its Macs.
Analysts also point to the rising cost of memory chips as a significant hurdle. According to Anshel Sag, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, while the software for local AI processing is now ready, the hardware has become too expensive for many users. He noted that two years ago, AI laptops were priced below $2,000, but surging memory costs have driven up prices, with Nvidia's DGX Spark AI desktop machine increasing by about 75% to $6,950.
