SpaceX is reportedly seeking to raise $40 billion in a financing effort led by Apollo Global Management to purchase chips from Nvidia, according to the Financial Times. This move underscores SpaceX's significant investment in artificial intelligence computing infrastructure.
CEO Elon Musk has stated that SpaceX plans to build its future AI computing capacity exclusively with Nvidia hardware, including the company's Vera Rubin architecture. This commitment places SpaceX's largest capital spending area with a single supplier. In the second quarter, SpaceX allocated $15.8 billion to AI computing infrastructure out of a total capital expenditure of $18.4 billion. This spending has grown substantially from $749 million a year earlier.
SpaceX's installed computing capacity stood at 1.4 gigawatts at the end of June. Management projects this capacity to exceed 2 gigawatts by the end of 2026 and potentially approach 10 gigawatts by the end of 2027. The company disclosed $28 billion in non-cancellable purchase commitments at the end of June, with $22.2 billion maturing in 2027, largely related to AI infrastructure and cloud capacity. Agreements with Anthropic and Google also specify Nvidia GPUs, though these contracts include termination clauses.
