Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has replaced his foreign minister, Sugiono, with career diplomat Arrmanatha Nasir. The appointment, made on Thursday, marks the second significant cabinet change by the president in less than three weeks.
Nasir, who previously served as Indonesia's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, was Sugiono's deputy. Analysts suggest Nasir's appointment could lead to a shake-up within the foreign ministry.
This reshuffling follows the dismissal of Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa on September 14, who was replaced by his deputy, Suahasil Nazara. Investors reportedly welcomed that move, hoping it would restore confidence in Indonesia's $1.5 trillion economy after a period of policy uncertainty.
Analysts have noted that Sugiono's foreign ministry had been somewhat sidelined as President Prabowo took a more prominent role in foreign policy. Sugiono, who is not a diplomat and hails from Prabowo's Gerindra party, was described as Prabowo's "ideological child" and a trusted aide. During his tenure, Sugiono oversaw key foreign policy initiatives, including Indonesia's entry into BRICS and its pledge to join US President Donald Trump's Board of Peace initiative for Gaza. Indonesia also committed troops to a proposed international stabilization force for Gaza.
