Iran distances itself from Houthi attacks on Saudi base

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Tehran is "not at war with Saudi Arabia," distancing the country from recent Houthi actions and commenting that the Houthis have "their own issues." The remarks come as Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for a drone and missile attack on Saudi Arabia's Sharurah military base, with spokesperson Yahya Saree stating the attack targeted "weapons depots and command and control centres that are managing the aggression against our nation and people."

Yemen's Houthis said Sunday that Saudi Arabia had launched more than 50 strikes against their positions in 24 hours, after the group claimed a rare drone and missile attack on a military base in the kingdom. The Houthis have been engaged in renewed fighting with Saudi-backed government forces since Yemen's civil war reignited in July, when the group declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia and began targeting its ships in the Red Sea.

The Houthi claim follows renewed fighting between the group and forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognised government, backed by Riyadh. The Yemeni military said its air force conducted three strikes against Houthi positions and barracks in the Taiz region, with the September Net website reporting that several Houthi fighters were killed. Separately, Houthi media reported on Sunday that Saudi Arabia had carried out two strikes on Saada, in the north of Yemen, a stronghold for the group. The Almasirah TV channel also reported artillery fire in the border district of Monabbih, in the same province. Soon after, Saudi Arabia's civil defence agency sent alerts warning of potential attacks in two regions bordering Yemen.
