Ukraine's Navy reported on Sept. 12, 2026, that one of its Sargan-3000 naval drones destroyed a Russian unmanned vessel in the Black Sea. The Navy described the event as the "first-ever naval battle" between unmanned boats, a joint operation with Ukraine's military intelligence agency.
The development marks a significant escalation in unmanned warfare tactics at sea, with both sides increasingly relying on drone technology, potentially altering naval combat dynamics and increasing risks to maritime logistics and conventional vessels.
Ukraine's Navy reported on September 12, 2026, that one of its Sargan-3000 naval drones destroyed a Russian unmanned vessel in the Black Sea. The Navy described the event as the "first-ever naval battle" between unmanned boats, a joint operation with Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR).
The Russian drone was destroyed by a Ukrainian Sargan-3000 unmanned boat, equipped with a 12.7-mm Protector remote weapons station, according to the Navy. The encounter marked a historic first, with the Navy stating, "This is the first-ever battle between unmanned naval boats." Video footage of the operation was published on the Navy's official Telegram account.
The Kyiv Independent noted that it could not independently verify the Navy's report at the time of publication. This operation signifies a shift from naval drones attacking conventional ships to drone-on-drone maritime combat, as both Ukraine and Russia increasingly move toward unmanned warfare at sea.
Ukraine has significantly expanded its maritime-drone operations in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov, reportedly striking 105 Russian vessels and maritime logistics targets this summer in the Sea of Azov campaign alone. Russia is also developing and deploying more unmanned surface systems, with recent satellite imagery suggesting Moscow is constructing its first dedicated naval-drone port in occupied Crimea.
The Sargan-3000, Ukraine's naval unmanned system, passed combat testing in April 2026 and is described by the Navy as a highly maneuverable, multi-purpose platform capable of executing strike missions.
