Jones articulated his vision in an interview with HousingWire, emphasizing the distinction between an MLS stewarding the marketplace and owning it. He asserted that brokerages are not obligated to join an MLS but, if they choose to participate, they agree to a level of cooperation with other members. Jones also highlighted that while brokers can pursue various business models, including private listings or "office exclusives" that are not shared with other MLS participants, the MLS's role is to provide a comprehensive and reliable picture of inventory within its cooperative framework.

Regarding data usage, particularly by AI companies, Jones stated that once a listing closes and becomes part of a compilation of data within the MLS, the MLS must act as a steward. He stressed the importance of licensing and authorizing data usage to maintain a "chain of custody" and ensure it is used rightfully, respecting brokers' opt-out preferences for syndication.

Jones also addressed the confusion surrounding different listing statuses, such as "coming soon," and advocated for separating the cooperative marketplace from public marketing efforts. He believes that conflating these two distinct areas leads to significant confusion within the industry. Looking ahead, Jones suggested that MLSs that do not build upon brokerage relationships risk becoming dissipated, underscoring the enduring importance of cooperation.
