Flávio Bolsonaro, a leading candidate in Brazil's presidential election, has stated that he would pursue pragmatic relationships with both the United States and China if elected. He emphasized that his administration's primary focus would be on serving the interests of the Brazilian people, irrespective of the country involved in dealings.
Bolsonaro articulated that Brazil is currently in a strong strategic position globally due to its significant potential in energy and food production. He suggested that Brazil should not be forced to choose sides between major powers but rather engage with all nations that are oriented towards development and willing to invest in and transfer technology to Brazil. This approach contrasts with what he described as the current government's stance of "declaring war on the United States and kissing China’s boots."
His campaign events have seen supporters waving Brazilian, US, and Israeli flags, symbolizing a potential shift in foreign policy away from the current administration's hedging strategy between global powers. Bolsonaro has also expressed a desire to strengthen ties with the US, including seeking a free trade agreement and potentially partnering on rare earth resources. However, experts suggest that while aligning on security matters with the US, he would likely maintain significant economic ties with China, Brazil's top trading partner.
Separately, three right-wing members of the European Parliament sent a letter to the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, calling for an assessment of allegations against Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The letter, shared on social media by influencer Paulo Figueiredo and former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, requested close monitoring of Brazil's electoral process.
