A 28-year-old British climber has died after falling approximately 60 meters (200 feet) from Torrecerredo, one of the highest mountains in northern Spain. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon while the man was descending from the summit of the peak, located in the Cantabrian Mountains.
Emergency services were alerted around 13:27 local time (11:27 GMT) after reports of a person falling on the mountain's eastern face. A rescue group, including a doctor, was dispatched by helicopter. The doctor confirmed the climber's death at approximately 14:18. Specialist mountain rescuers were later lowered by winch to recover the body and belongings.
The UK Foreign Office stated it is in contact with local authorities following the reports of the death of a British national in Spain. The identity of the climber has not been released by Spanish authorities. Torrecerredo has an elevation of about 2,650 meters (8,690 feet) and is part of the Picos de Europa range, known for its challenging routes.
In a separate incident on Thursday afternoon, a 54-year-old French woman suffered a leg injury on the same mountain range and was transported to a hospital.
