Avalanche buries 10 climbers at Himalayan base camp

Forecasts indicated heavy snowfall in the days prior to the incident. Poor weather conditions, including persistent rain and snow in Nepal's mountain districts, have hampered rescue efforts, preventing helicopters and rescue teams from reaching the site. Bibhuti Chand Thakur of Himalaya Holidays Trekking told AFP that eight members of their expedition team and two from another company were reported missing. The Nepali team had been sent ahead to prepare the camp, manage the route, and fix ropes.

This incident occurs as Nepal's climbing tourism industry faces treacherous conditions due to extreme weather. Earlier this week, climbers were forced to leave Mount Manaslu due to the rising threat of avalanches. Separately, extreme weather in the neighboring Indian region of Uttar Pradesh has resulted in over 50 deaths. Efforts are also ongoing to recover bodies following a massive flood and landslide in August on the Nepal-Tibet border, which left over 6,000 people missing. A glacial collapse in the Himalayas in August caused over 1,400 confirmed deaths.
