Australian activist missing in Cambodia, wife seeks government help

Dang expressed deep concern for her husband's safety, stating, “My family and I are really worried about his safety, and we just only want to know where he is and what happened to him.” She urged the Australian government to pressure Cambodia to investigate his whereabouts.

Hiep was traveling with Nguyen Duc Thuan, another Vietnamese activist holding a Norwegian passport, who is also missing. The pro-democracy diaspora political party Viet Tan described the disappearances as concerning, referencing past incidents where Vietnamese dissidents vanished in neighboring countries and later appeared in custody in Vietnam. "Their disappearance is not an ordinary ‘missing person’ incident. Both men are long-time human rights advocates and Viet Tan members," the organization stated.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that consular officials are providing assistance to Hiep's family. The families of both missing men have filed an appeal with the UN working group on enforced or involuntary disappearances.
