Bluesky seeks .bsky domain suffix for user-controlled online identity

For example, a user with the handle @sarahp.bsky.social could potentially have their online identity simplified to "sarahp.bsky." This move could enable Bluesky to develop user profiles into more comprehensive personal home pages, enhancing users' online presence and control.

While the application is pending, ICANN is scheduled to publish new domain applications on October 7, 2026, with Bluesky's request included. The entire approval process is anticipated to take between 18 to 24 months.

Bluesky has stated that it has not yet finalized the specifics of how these ".bsky" domains would be requested, registered, or distributed. Crucially, the company has indicated no intention to sell or monetize these domains, a decision that contrasts with the common practice of domain registration as a revenue stream for startups.

According to Bluesky COO Rose Wang, this decision stems from the company's core belief in an open web and user ownership of online identity. "Domains are a big part of the open web, as they allow users to control their own online identity," Wang said. "Bluesky was built on the belief that you should own your presence online, not rent it from a platform that can take it away."
