Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky stated the company is unlikely to permit external AI agents, such as Meta's Muse, to make bookings on its platform. This stance reflects concerns among travel companies that AI assistants could bypass direct consumer engagement and diminish platform traffic. Chesky believes current AI agents struggle with the complex decision-making involved in travel planning.

The stance of major travel platforms like Airbnb on integrating with AI agents could significantly impact how consumers discover and book travel, potentially disrupting the business models of online travel agencies that rely on direct traffic and transaction fees.
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky stated that the vacation rental platform is unlikely to permit external artificial intelligence agents, such as Meta Platforms' Muse, to make bookings for users. This stance highlights growing concerns among travel companies that AI assistants could bypass direct consumer engagement and weaken platform traffic. Chesky argues that planning travel involves complex behaviors like browsing photos, reading reviews, and communicating with hosts, tasks that current AI agents struggle to handle effectively.
An independent analyst, Mostly Borrowed Ideas (MBI), revealed he liquidated his Airbnb position after testing Meta's AI agent Muse for approximately 10 days. MBI, a significant Airbnb user and investor, found that Muse could identify direct booking options with hosts that were 60% cheaper than through Airbnb, requiring only a single click to confirm payment. This discovery led him to believe that Airbnb might be on the "wrong side of the future."
MBI also countered traditional arguments about Airbnb's defensive moats, such as trust and exclusive supply. He suggested that AI agents can build trust by scraping reviews from across the web and can easily manage listings on multiple platforms for hosts, thereby collapsing the exclusive supply barrier. He noted that hosts have historically faced high friction costs for multi-platform management, which AI can now eliminate.
