Social network Bluesky announced on Tuesday that it has increased its video upload limit to 10 minutes, a significant jump from the previous three-minute limit. This change aims to make the platform more competitive with other social media services.
In addition to the extended video length, Bluesky has also raised the maximum file size for uploads to 300MB and reported a 2x-3x improvement in upload speeds. These updates are enabled by the AT Protocol, which underpins Bluesky and other applications like Bluescreen, Reelo, and Skylight.
The new 10-minute limit aligns Bluesky with platforms like TikTok, which also allows 10-minute videos recorded directly within its app. Competitors such as Meta's Threads permit five-minute videos, while X offers longer upload options for its paying subscribers, up to several hours with larger file sizes.
This move by Bluesky comes as the platform seeks to boost its active user base, which data from Similarweb indicates has fallen by over 25% year-over-year as of July.
