Breakthrough Energy Ventures, an investment firm founded by Bill Gates, has unveiled its sixth cohort of 21 early-stage startups. These companies are being supported through the Breakthrough Energy Fellows program, which aims to foster innovation in technologies critical for the future of energy. The program's managing partner, Eric Toone, highlighted that while AI data centers are a notable factor, the broader surge in electricity demand is driven by the global effort to electrify various economic sectors to curb carbon emissions, a trend expected to triple overall electricity needs.
The selected startups represent a diverse range of fields, including nuclear fusion, with companies like Borealis Fusion exploring proton-boron fuel and StarWarden developing heat management technology. Other ventures focus on improving semiconductor and data center efficiency, such as Bedrock Semiconductor, K1 Semiconductor, and Vari Flux, with K1 aiming to reduce power electronics costs by up to 50%.
Breakthrough Energy is also investing in agriculture and critical minerals, supporting innovations in molecular sensing for crop disease detection and robotics for ocean floor mineral harvesting. The program is backing companies like AmyHyTech and Ammovolt Energy that are developing solutions for transporting hydrogen using ammonia, addressing the current lack of infrastructure for hydrogen.
Notably, this year's cohort also includes startups focused on climate adaptation, acknowledging that decarbonization efforts may take longer than initially hoped. Benjamin Gaddy, serving as acting director for the Fellows program, emphasized that the organization takes significant, calculated risks on promising technologies with the potential for substantial payoffs.
