Microsoft gives DARPA hands-on access to quantum system at new Maryland site

Microsoft announced it will provide the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) with direct, on-site access to its latest quantum computing hardware at a newly opened research center in Maryland. The facility, located in the University of Maryland's Discovery District, is a collaboration with the university and other industry partners.

The center will host a new quantum system equipped with Microsoft's Majorana 2 chip, allowing DARPA experts to conduct independent testing and evaluation. Quantum computers are of significant interest to national security for their potential to solve complex problems, including cracking encrypted communications. Microsoft is among several quantum firms being assessed by DARPA to determine if any quantum computing approach can yield economically feasible systems by 2033.

Previously, DARPA evaluated Microsoft's technology remotely. This new arrangement signifies a move to physical access, enabling DARPA specialists to load hardware and run their own boot sequences. Zulfi Alam, corporate vice president of Microsoft Quantum, stated that this access is crucial for DARPA to "kick the tires and to sort the figure out how good this machine is and how it's performing." He added that the arrangement imposes engineering rigor and that DARPA is a trusted organization with which Microsoft can share its work and future plans. The system is designed to accommodate future chip developments beyond the initial Majorana 2 chip.
