Amazon pledges to pay for data center energy costs, improve water efficiency

As part of this commitment, Amazon has signed the White House Ratepayer Protection Pledge, agreeing to strengthen the grid and shield ratepayers from increased costs due to data center expansion. The company highlighted its investments in energy and water resource stewardship, designing facilities to minimize consumption and innovating for efficiency. Amazon aims to be water positive by 2030, with over 50 projects on track to return 5.8 billion gallons of water annually to communities. In 2025, the company reported returning three gallons for every four used in its data centers, contributing to job creation and local water infrastructure.

Amazon also expressed support for transparent water data reporting, emphasizing metrics such as the use of non-potable sources, water use efficiency (WUE) per unit of compute, and the percentage of operating hours requiring cooling water.
